Google reviews disappeared? Why it happens, and what you can do

Reviews go missing from Google profiles every day, real ones included. Here is how to tell what happened, which reviews Google will take down, how to ask for a real one back, and what never to do.

First check: filtered or deleted?

Ask the customer to open their own Google Maps contributions. If they can still see the review there but the public can't, it was filtered by Google's automated system, not deleted. If it is gone for them too, it was removed. Practitioners report that most missing reviews are filtered rather than deleted by hand.

Why real reviews vanish

What Google says. Its spam detection “may also mistakenly remove legitimate reviews”, and the fix is to contact support. Google bans unusual volumes or patterns of reviews meant to change a rating, and incentivised reviews are removed. Since April 2026, when Google sees a sudden spike of spam reviews on a profile it removes them, pauses new reviews, tells the owner and may show the public a notice. Profiles caught with fake engagement can have new reviews blocked and existing ones unpublished for a set period.

What practitioners have seen (observations, not Google policy): reviews written on the business's own Wi-Fi or from a tablet in the shop, several reviews on the same day, reviewers with brand-new accounts or far from the business, and duplicate listings that strand reviews. Google also confirmed in 2023 that it removed policy-abiding reviews by mistake and restored them. Sources: Sterling Sky, Search Engine Land.

How to get a Google review removed: which ones qualify

Only reviews that break the policy: fake engagement, conflicts of interest (a competitor, a former employee), off-topic content, offensive content, impersonation, or advertising such as links and phone numbers. A fair but harsh review stays.

  • Report it from your Business Profile (Read reviews, then the report icon), or in Google's Reviews Management Tool with “Report a new review for removal”.
  • Track it in the same tool: “Decision pending”, “Report reviewed – no policy violation”, or “Escalated”.
  • Google says review evaluation typically takes several days. If it finds no violation you can appeal once per review, up to 10 reviews per appeal, and the result comes by email.
  • Someone demanding money to stop one-star reviews? Google has a separate extortion report form. Don't pay, and keep screenshots.

Getting a real review back

  • Contact Google Business Profile support and choose missing reviews. Attach screenshots of the review and, if you can, the customer's own view of it.
  • Owners report replies in roughly one to two weeks. Some have been told that reviews removed by the automated system can't be reinstated, so a reply is not a guarantee.
  • If support stalls, a Product Expert in the Google Business Profile Help Community can escalate.

What never to do

  • Offer money, discounts or free work for a review, for changing one, or for removing a bad one.
  • Ask only happy customers (gating), or discourage negative reviews.
  • Have staff, family or friends post reviews, or post from several accounts.
  • Pressure customers to review while they are at your counter or on your Wi-Fi.
  • Give staff review quotas or ask for reviews naming a staff member. Google added this to its policy in April 2026, per Search Engine Roundtable.

Breaking these can get reviews removed, new reviews blocked and a public warning on your profile. Source: Google Maps content policy.

In Canada

The Competition Bureau warned in January 2024 that businesses that write or allow misleading reviews may be liable under the Competition Act, and that employees must disclose their connection to the business. Source: Competition Bureau of Canada.

Emailing customers to ask for a review is generally treated as a commercial electronic message under CASL, so it needs consent and a working unsubscribe. Check with a lawyer for your own case.

How we handle reviews for clients

We set up a steady, honest flow: every finished job gets the same request, with nothing offered and nobody filtered out, sent after the customer has left rather than from a tablet at your counter. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking (Google). A steady flow from real customers is also what survives the spam filters.

For dental practices in Ontario, RCDSO does not allow testimonials in a clinic's own advertising, so reviews stay where patients leave them. See our dental notes.

Questions about missing reviews

Can I get Google to delete a bad review?

Only if it breaks Google's policy: fake, off-topic, a conflict of interest, offensive, or advertising. Google says not to report a review just because you disagree with it.

How long does a review report take?

Google says a reported review typically takes several days to evaluate. Owners who ask support to restore a missing review report waits of about one to two weeks, and restoration is not guaranteed.

Is it allowed to ask customers for reviews?

Yes, as long as you ask every customer, offer nothing in return, and never ask only the happy ones. Asking only satisfied customers (gating) and incentives are both against Google's policy.
