Why the prices are all over the place
Ask five providers what local SEO costs and you will get five answers, from ten dollars a month to ten thousand. They are not selling the same thing. At one end is software that measures and leaves the work to you. At the other is an agency that runs your website, your ads and your profile, often on a long contract. Most small contractors need something in between, and it helps to know what each price actually buys.
It is also a market most Canadian businesses have never bought from. A CFIB survey published in December 2025 found only 52% of Canadian small and medium businesses use a Google Business Profile or Maps at all. [2] Statistics Canada found 24% of Canadian businesses buy online advertising of any kind, and 46% of those buy SEO. [3]
What the market charges in 2026
| Provider type | Published monthly price | Terms |
|---|---|---|
| Map-tracking apps | US$10 to about US$60 | You measure; you do the work |
| Local SEO firm, Vancouver | from CA$500; CA$1,000 mid tier | Month to month |
| Canadian agency guides | CA$750 to CA$2,500 | Single location |
| Managed local SEO, software company | US$799 to US$1,299 per location | 12-month contract |
| Contractor SEO agency | US$2,800 | Published entry price |
| National done-for-you SEO | US$3,500 | Month to month |
| HVAC and plumbing agency | US$3,000 to US$5,000 minimum | 6 to 12 months |
| AI-search agencies | US$2,000 to US$10,000 | Mostly mid-market |
| Large trades agency | US$3,000 to US$10,000 | 12 to 24 months |
What each price level usually buys
| Type | Who does the work | Typical terms |
|---|---|---|
| Map-tracking app | You. It shows where you rank and stops there | Monthly, cancel any time |
| Listings-sync service | Pushes your details to directories. Published at US$199 to US$999 per location per year | Annual, often auto-renewing |
| Review and messaging platform | Software for requests and texting. US$299 to US$449 a month published, with fees on top | Often 12 months, long notice |
| Local SEO specialist | They do profile, listings and pages | From month to month to 12 months |
| Full-service agency | Website, SEO and ads together | Often 6 to 24 months, early-exit fees |
Reading a quote: three things that change the real price
Currency
Many of the best-known providers publish in US dollars. A US-priced plan billed to a Canadian card costs noticeably more once it is converted, and the amount moves with the exchange rate every month. Compare like with like.
Per location
Several plans are priced per location. A contractor with a second yard in the next town can find the price has doubled. Ask how they count, and whether a service-area business with one profile counts as one.
The term
A cheaper monthly rate on a 12-month contract can cost more than a higher one you can leave. Work out the total you are committing to, then read the cancellation clause: notice periods, auto-renewal dates and early-exit fees.
Is a one-off audit worth buying?
Often, yes, if it ends in something you can act on without the provider. A good audit measures your whole area, names who is taking the zones you are losing, and gives you a plan in order. If you can hand that plan to your own staff or do it yourself, you have got what you paid for. If it ends in “book a call to discuss”, it was a sales meeting with a report attached.
What you should get at any price
Whatever you pay, these are fair to expect, and easy to check before you sign:
- A measurement before any work, across your whole area, not one search from the office. Why that matters.
- A written list of what they will do each month, and a dated log of what they did.
- The same measurement repeated, on the same points and searches, so you can see what changed.
- You own everything: the Google profile (they get manager access, never ownership), the website, the domain, the directory logins.
- Published prices and plain terms, including exactly how to cancel.
- Some link to money: calls or booked jobs, from your own records. How that works.
Red flags
A promised position
- Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. [4] A promised position is a guess, or a search nobody makes.
They own the profile or the site
- If they are the owner of your Google profile, or the site sits on their platform, leaving means starting again.
Long contract, long notice
- Auto-renewal and long notice periods are the most common complaint about marketing providers in the reviews we read.
Reviews filtered or rewarded
- A review tool that only sends happy customers to Google puts your whole profile at risk. The rules.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Show me where I stand today, across my area, before I pay anything.
- Who will actually make the changes, and where will I see them?
- Do I own the Google profile, the website and every login?
- What does cancelling look like? Is there a notice period or a fee?
- Do you work for my direct competitors in my area?
- How will we know if it made money, not just rankings?
Questions people ask about paying for SEO
These are the questions Canadians type into Google about the cost and value of SEO, from Google’s own suggestions and “People also ask” box, pulled 12 October 2026. [5]
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
For a local service business, the map is still where most local searches end up. In a September 2026 study of about 200,000 local searches, Google Maps showed the tracked business in 66% of searches, against 32% to 38% for ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers. [6] The same study found business websites were the largest source those AI answers cited. So the work that helps on the map, a complete profile and real service pages, is also what AI answers read. Whether it is worth it for you depends on one thing: can you tell which jobs it brought in? If nobody can show you that, you are paying for a feeling.
Can I do local SEO myself?
Yes, and much of it costs nothing but time: the right primary category, every service you sell listed on your Google profile, accurate hours, and a review request after every completed job. A tracking app from about US$10 a month will show you where you stand. What you pay a provider for is the hours and the consistency, month after month, plus pages written from your real jobs. Start with the profile checklist.
Can ChatGPT do my SEO?
It can draft. It cannot verify your Google profile, take photos of your jobs, or know which towns you actually work in. Google’s spam policies treat pages mass-produced to rank, by AI or by hand, as “scaled content abuse”. [7] A draft is a fine start if a person adds your real facts and checks every claim before it goes live.
Why hire a local SEO company instead?
When the hours are the problem, not the knowledge. If you hire one, use the questions above: see your map before you pay, know who makes the changes, own every login, and know how to cancel.
