Local SEO · Vancouver, British Columbia
SEO for Vancouver service businesses, from next door in Surrey
Vancouver's first page for SEO help is held mostly by agency pages competing on the city's name, and its keyword difficulty was the second highest of the cities we scored. Below is what we measured there in October 2026, what it tells a contractor, clinic or practice choosing help, and how to see your own map before you spend anything.
Same region, different city
Merkat is a founder-run business in Surrey, BC, one city over in the same Metro Vancouver region. That makes Vancouver our nearest big market, not our home turf: we have no Vancouver office and no Vancouver clients yet. The work itself is done in your Google profile, listings and website, wherever we sit.
Being in the same region does show up in the data. When we checked “local seo surrey” across Canada on 12 October 2026, results 6, 7 and 9 were pages written for Vancouver. Google treats the metro as one market for some searches, so a Vancouver business can be competing with firms in Burnaby, Richmond or Surrey without knowing it, and the other way round.
Vancouver asks for an agency
| What people typed | Monthly searches in Canada | Google's click price estimate |
|---|---|---|
| seo vancouver (or vancouver seo) | 2,900 | US$21.71 |
| seo company vancouver | 1,900 | US$30.24 |
| seo agency vancouver | 1,300 | US$17.01 |
| seo services vancouver | 1,300 | US$10.95 |
| marketing agency vancouver | 1,300 | US$7.83 |
| digital marketing agency vancouver | 1,000 | US$7.35 |
| seo expert vancouver | 720 | no estimate |
| local seo vancouver | 320 | no single estimate |
Volumes from Google Ads for Canada, pulled 12 October 2026. Google gives “seo vancouver” and “vancouver seo” one shared number, so that pair appears once and we have not added the rows together.
Three of the eight phrases use the word “agency”. In Calgary, “seo agency” drew 390 searches against 1,300 here. The other thing worth seeing is price: advertisers were estimated to pay about US$30 for a click on “seo company vancouver” but about US$11 on “seo services vancouver”, at the same search volume. Someone asking for a company is closer to hiring, and the bids reflect it.
Hardly anyone names their trade. “Dental marketing vancouver” had about 20 searches a month and “contractor marketing vancouver” about 10. HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrician and dental SEO phrases for Vancouver all came back at zero. Owners search for help in general and sort out fit later, which is why it is worth asking any firm what it has done for a business like yours.
Page one is mostly agencies selling the city name
For “seo vancouver”, searched from Vancouver on 14 October 2026, 6 of the 9 organic results were agency service pages, and two of those had “vancouver” written into the domain. The other 3 were directories that rank agencies: Semrush's agency list, Clutch and The Manifest. No social pages or forums made the list.
“Local seo vancouver” (Canada, 12 October) leaned further the same way: 7 agency service pages, one agency blog post and one directory. “Seo company vancouver” was the exception. There, four results were lists or company databases, one was a Facebook page, and only four were agency pages. Three of the nine domains contained the word “vancouver”.
What it means for you: a domain or a page title built on the city's name is a sign of what a firm optimised for, not proof it can move your map. In your own trade the pattern is similar, with directories and a few strong local sites sharing the first page. A correct free profile on the directories that rank for your work is part of the job, and our guide to Canadian citations shows which ones are worth the time.
The map: an even field, no runaway leader
Google Maps for “seo agency vancouver”, searched from Vancouver on 14 October 2026, put agencies with 51, 53 and 20 reviews in the first three places. The most reviewed agency in the first 20 had 73 and sat 14th. None had reached 100. The middle of the 20 had about 25 reviews, six had 50 or more, and one showed none.
Ratings told you almost nothing: every rated agency was between 4.6 and 5.0. Categories were split, 10 under “Marketing agency”, 9 under “Internet marketing service” and one under “Advertising agency”.
When review counts are this close, they stop separating anyone, and distance from the searcher and the right primary category carry more weight. The same is likely true in a trade map: steady, honest reviews from every finished job matter, but they are rarely the whole answer. Our reviews guide covers what helps without breaking Google's rules.
Difficulty of 31: harder than most, not the hardest
Keyword difficulty is a 0 to 100 estimate of how hard it is to get into the organic top ten, based mostly on the links behind the pages already there. “Seo vancouver” scored 31 in our October data. Of the eight cities we scored, only Calgary was higher, at 50. Ottawa scored 26, Toronto 24, Edmonton 23, and Mississauga, Winnipeg and Hamilton scored 0.
For a Vancouver service business, a score like that means the organic results for your own trade and neighbourhood probably take real pages and a few genuine local links, not a quick fix. The map is a separate contest, decided by distance, profile and reviews, and the score does not measure it. We will not put a timeline on either. We measure, do the work, and report what moved.
What we would do for a Vancouver business
- Scan your map at points across the neighbourhoods you serve, from Kitsilano to East Van or out into Burnaby, before any spend.
- Set up your Google Business Profile inside Google's rules: the right primary category, real services, honest service areas.
- Build and correct your free listings on the Canadian and trade directories that rank for your work.
- Write area pages only where the scan shows you missing, from jobs you have done there.
- Check whether ChatGPT and other AI assistants name you when asked about your trade in Vancouver.
- Send a monthly recorded update of what moved and what did not. No position is promised.
Rates are on the pricing page, in Canadian dollars and month to month. For what local SEO tends to cost in Canada, see our cost guide.
Questions from Vancouver owners
You're in Surrey. Does that make a difference for a Vancouver business?
Not to the work, which happens in your accounts. It does mean we know the region's search patterns from measuring it, and we are close enough to meet if that ever matters to you. We have no Vancouver clients yet, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.
Do I need a Vancouver address to show up on the Vancouver map?
Google ranks map results largely by distance from the person searching, so a business based outside the city is at a disadvantage for searches made downtown. Do not fix that with a virtual office or a mailbox address: it breaks Google's rules and profiles get suspended for it. Our guide to how the map pack works explains what you can change.
An agency promised me page one for “seo vancouver”. Should I believe it?
Nobody controls Google's results, and a firm's own position for its city name tells you little about your map. Before you sign anything that promises a position, read what those promises usually cover.
Where do these Vancouver numbers come from?
Google Ads search volumes for Canada and the Canada-wide results, both pulled 12 October 2026; organic and Maps results searched from Vancouver on 14 October 2026; keyword difficulty from our October 2026 data. It is a snapshot and will change.
