What a geo-grid tracker does
Google Maps shows different businesses depending on where the person searching is standing. A geo-grid tracker asks what Maps shows at many points across your area and draws the answer as a grid of positions, so you see the whole area instead of one search from your office. Why the map changes from street to street.
Local Falcon, Whitespark and BrightLocal all sell this as self-serve software. Merkat’s free scan is a one-time snapshot of the same kind. The difference that matters is not the map. It is who does the work after you see it.
The options at a glance
Prices as each company publishes them, in US dollars, read on 12 October 2026. They change, so check before you buy.
| Option | Published price | What you get | Free to try |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitespark Local Ranking Grids | From US$10 a month [1] | Grids of up to 225 points. Its separate Local Rank Tracker is US$14 to US$200 a month | A free local ranking checker |
| Local Falcon | From US$24.99 a month (Starter, 7,500 credits) [2] | One credit per grid point, so a 9×9 grid uses 81. Grids from 3×3 to 21×21. Lists AI visibility tracking | 100 credits on sign-up, no card |
| BrightLocal | From US$41 a month billed monthly, or US$31 a month billed yearly, for one location [3] | A geo-grid for up to five keywords on its entry plan, inside a wider suite (listings, reviews, reports) | 14-day trial, no card |
| Merkat free scan | Free | One snapshot: 9 points across your area, 5 searches, your position at each, in about a minute. For your email, the businesses holding the spots you miss [4] | It is the free part |
| Merkat monthly plan | On the pricing page | A person does the profile, listings and page work; the map is re-measured every week on the same points and searches as proof [5] | Start with the free scan |
When a self-serve tool is the better fit
Choose one of the tools if any of these is true. At their prices, it is the sensible buy:
- You or someone on staff will do the work. The tool shows where you stand; the profile, listings and pages are yours to fix.
- You want to run your own grids, on your own schedule, at sizes you choose.
- You are an agency or a multi-location business tracking many profiles, where per-scan credits or per-location plans fit how you work.
- You want a wider toolkit in one place, such as listings or review management, which some of them bundle.
We say the same on our own map tracking page: cheap tools measure well, and we don’t sell the map on its own.
When done-for-you is the better fit
- The hours are the problem. You can read the map, but nobody has time to act on it every month.
- You want someone accountable for the changes, with a dated log of each one, and you keep ownership of your profile and site.
- You want the map beside your booked jobs, not just positions. How that works.
What to check in any tracker, including ours
- The same points and the same searches every time. If either changes, the comparison with earlier weeks is broken.
- A number at every point, not only a colour or an average. An average position can hide whether you are in the top three.
- A grid that matches where you work. Too small and it misses the towns you serve; too big and it fills with places you never go. How to read the result.
- Failed searches shown as failures, not as “not found”. Since September 2026, rank trackers across the industry have reported Google feeding them bad results, so a sudden drop is worth a re-check before anyone acts on it. [6]
- The currency and the unit. These tools publish in US dollars, priced per credit, per keyword or per location. Work out what your area and your searches will actually cost each month.
Where Merkat sits
Our free scan is a quick first look, not a tracker. If you want to track it yourself after that, the tools above do it well. If you would rather a person did the work and showed you the map every week as proof, that is our monthly plan. One business per trade or practice, per area, month to month, and no promise of a position. Run the free scan.
