What Local Services Ads are

Local Services Ads are the boxes at the very top of some Google searches, above the map, with a business name, a rating and a “Google Verified” badge. You pay when someone contacts you through the ad, a call, a message or a booking, not when they click. [1]

In Canada, Google lists electricians, HVAC, plumbers, roofers, locksmiths, pest control and window cleaning as home services that can carry the badge. [1] Google also mentions health, business and other services, but does not say which are open in Canada. We could not confirm that law firms, dentists or clinics can run them here yet, so check your own category in Google’s eligibility tool before you plan around them. [2]

Getting in takes checks. Google checks your business registration and identity, and asks for the licences your province requires and for general and professional liability insurance. Electricians, HVAC, garage door, locksmith and plumbing businesses also need a check on the people who do the work. And you need a verified, public Google Business Profile. [3]

What they cost

Google publishes no price per lead and no minimum. You set a weekly budget and Google sends leads until it is spent. [1] We found no Canadian cost-per-lead figures. The published numbers are American agency averages: one 2026 compilation puts a typical trade lead at US$25 to US$80, about US$53 on average, and another puts HVAC near US$80 and plumbing near US$69. [4] [5] Treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote for the Fraser Valley.

Since 2024 Google credits some invalid leads automatically, and it stopped crediting leads for a job type or an area you said you don’t serve, so set those correctly from day one. [6]

How Google decides which ad shows

Google names these factors for Local Services Ads: [7]

  • Your bid and budget, including its automatic “maximize leads” bidding.
  • Responsiveness. Google says missed calls may count against you.
  • Your reviews: rating and number.
  • The search: the job, the time of day and where the person is.
  • Your profile: services, bio, photos, and the checks you have passed.

Two of those are things you control without spending more: answering the phone, and earning reviews.

What SEO and the map pack are

The map pack is the three businesses under the map. You cannot buy a place in it: Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and that it ranks on relevance, distance and prominence. [8] Local SEO is the work on those three: the right categories and services on your Google profile, accurate details everywhere, service pages for the work you want, and a steady flow of reviews. How the map pack works.

The part they share: your Google profile

The two are not separate. Local Services Ads need a verified Business Profile, and the reviews on that profile count toward your ad’s ranking and review count. [3] [9] So the review you earn from a completed job helps both. Ask every customer after every completed job, the same way, with nothing offered in return. Filtering for happy customers breaks Google’s policy and can cost you the reviews you have. The review rules.

It also means a profile problem is an ad problem. If the profile is suspended or stuck in verification, the ads are in trouble too. Getting verified without trouble.

What is changing in 2026 and 2027

  • One badge. Since October 2025, Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified have been folded into a single “Google Verified” badge, and the old money-back guarantee has ended. Google may show the badge only where it thinks it helps. [10]
  • Moving into Google Ads. Google is moving Local Services Ads into Google Ads as a pay-per-lead campaign type: some US advertisers from August 2026, accounts outside the US in 2027. Google does not name Canada separately. Export your old reports before the move; they do not carry over. [11]
  • Inside AI Mode? Practitioners have reported a limited test of Local Services Ads inside Google’s AI Mode. Google has not confirmed it. [12]

Which to start with

If your category is eligible and you can answer every call, Local Services Ads can fill the phone soon after the checks pass. They stop the day the budget does, and an unanswered phone hurts the ranking you are paying for.

If your category isn’t eligible, or the budget is tight, the map pack is where your searches land. It takes longer, and nobody honest can promise a position, but the work stays done.

Many trades run both. If you do, judge each one by booked jobs, not leads: a lead that never books costs the same as one that does. How to tell if marketing is making money.

Where Merkat sits

We don’t run ads right now. We do the work both channels depend on: the verified Google profile, accurate details, reviews asked after every job, and service pages for the zones you are missing, measured across your whole area every week. If you run Local Services Ads, keep them; we’ll show you what the map is doing beside them.
